After one week, reservations have now climbed to 325,000. I wish they’d provide a breakdown for where each of those reservations was made in the world, but the support behind the Model 3 is staggering.

I highly doubt more than half of those people are actually going to buy the car. at this point, it’ll be 2020-2022 before they can even build that many cars, at which point you might as well just wait until they’re on the market for sale instead of contributing to an interest-free loan to Tesla.
I’d wager a lot of them have the “Apple fan” mindset, they put down a reservation primarily so they can go around telling people they reserved one.

What is the point of reserving at this point? The tax credit is well gone by then. So many other cars can come out by the time they even get to 200k 3's.
Counter point to my own point is that it is only $1,000 to reserve a spot.

Is the 200k limit specifically a US thing?

I’m interested but I’ll wait until they are actually being delivered.

Because people often buy cars for just as much without expecting a tax credit.

The Federal Tax Credit (sort of) applies to the first 200,000 EVs sold by a manufacturer in the US. I’m going to eventually make a post that actually clarifies how that credit works (hint: more than 200,000 cars will get the full credit!)

I feel it’ll be more than half, but no where near 100%. Life changes and priorities may change for reservation holders.

The US $7,500 tax credit expires after a manufacture hits 200k EV’s sold. So the 3 will probably hit it at somewhere between 50-100k units sold. I said 200k more because the time Tesla gets 200k 3's to market it’ll be around 2021 (my guess) and by then think of how many other cars could come out.
But yes the tax credit is U.S. only. Other countries may have incentives, but I’m not sure what they are.

You’re not focusing on the main point of my post.
many other cars can come out by the time they could get a 3.

So the number is only counting us sales?

Yes. After 200,00 U.S. 3's are sold the amount you’ll receive is half and then it’ll continue to wind down with further sales.

Correct. It’s a US Federal Tax Credit, so it only applies to sales of cars registered in the US for use in the US.

It looks like if they put a grill on it it would look like a Focus!

It really does - my first opinion of it was that it was a mish-mash of Tesla, Focus and Panamera.

Yeah without a grill in the front it looks very Porshe-esque.

Not just a Focus, a good looking Focus.

Fair enough.
